What is a reflective LED light?

Nowadays, LED lights have become the mainstream of lighting. There is an interesting question, why do LED lights in homes nowadays, whether they are desk lamps, pendant lamps, ceiling lamps, etc., often need to add a lamp shell? You should know that LED lights emit solid light, unlike traditional lamps such as incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps, which require a lamp shell on the outside.

There are many reasons that can be given, such as adjustment, aesthetics, protecting lighting fixtures, improving safety, and so on. And one of the most important points is to prevent glare. Because LED lights are point light sources, the light emitted by the chip is very strong. If you accidentally stare directly at them for a while, your eyes will feel uncomfortable (in fact, not only LED lights, but also high-power incandescent lights can’t stand staring at them all the time). Add a milky white lamp case, the light will be much softer when it comes out, and watching for a while won’t hurt your eyes.

However, if you want to be more particular or in places where lighting is more demanding, simply adding a lamp casing may not be enough. For example, in the classroom, students sitting in the back row will inevitably see the lights in front of the classroom because they have to keep staring at the blackboard in front of them. In this situation, even if it is covered by a lamp shell, it will still be glaring and uncomfortable over time.
Is there any way to make the lighting softer and provide maximum protection for students’ eyes?
Of course there is. For example, there is an advanced lighting technology called reflective luminescence that can effectively solve this problem.

The so-called reflective luminescence, in simple terms, refers to “seeing light but not the lamp”, which means that the light emitted by the light source is not directly irradiated, but is irradiated onto a special reflective surface and then reflected again. For example, the above picture shows a reflective LED light produced by Shanghai Sansi Optoelectronics Company, which has won the national 863 major scientific and technological achievements. There is a huge reflective cavity above the lamp, and the light emitted by the LED chips on both sides shines upwards onto the top of the reflective cavity, and then emits downwards through the diffuse reflection of the reflective cavity. In this way, the LED beads will not be exposed. At the same time, the light originally emitted from a point becomes emitted from a surface, and the point light source disperses into a surface light source, naturally making the light very soft. It should be noted that the material of the reflective cavity is very particular. On the one hand, the reflectivity should be high and there should not be too much light loss; On the other hand, mirror reflection should also be avoided to reduce the directionality of light.

In fact, reflective lighting technology can not only greatly improve the softness of light, but also enhance the uniformity of light. In many cases, the uniformity of lighting is also a concern for people. For example, in a classroom with a large space, if ordinary LED lights are used for illumination, it is easy to notice that the lighting in the classroom is actually alternating between light and dark. The area close to the light is very bright, while the area far away from the light is very dark. If we switch to reflective LED lights, this problem can be effectively solved. As mentioned earlier, reflective LED lights are “surface light sources”, and the brightness of each point is not very high but the emitting area is large. Coupled with appropriate dimming technology, the light in the entire classroom will become much more uniform.

In fact, nowadays, not only in school classrooms, but also in many places similar to classrooms such as subway stations and large shopping malls, the uniformity of lighting is also solved through reflective lighting technology. If we pay a little attention while shopping, we may easily notice the presence of reflective LED lights.
